Tiger Lake oder Badi Talab See

Jheels Ginger Coffee Bar & Bakery

Sunset View a Tandoori Restaurant

Udaipur Travel Guide

Udaipur in Rajasthan is also known as the city of lakes. After 2 weeks Rajasthan round trip, Udaipur seemed like an oasis of relaxation. The city centre is idyllically situated on the edge of two large lakes, over and in which picturesque palace buildings are enthroned. Most of them are hotels, but Rajasthan’s largest palace is also located here.

Udaipur Sights

In order to get to know the city better, a walking tour is a good option. This way you can learn a little bit about the history and culture of the city and do some sightseeing at the same time.

Udaipur Temples

The famous Jagdish Temple is certainly on your way. It is only a few hundred meters from the entrance of the palace.

Less known, but no less impressive is the Radha temple right next door.

TIP: If you walk around the pagoda of the Radha temple and walk on the back side first into the passage and then up the stairs, you will suddenly find yourself at eye level with the pagoda and the rich decoration. Here you also have a view over the water on the other side.

Udaipur Pagoda

Do not miss the palace under any circumstances.

The palace is the symbol of the city. Already from the outside the complex looks beautiful, how it is enthroned there above the water. Inside, many small corridors, splendid courtyards and wonderful views await you. A visit to Rajasthan’s largest palace is definitely worthwhile.

TIP: If you have a student card, use it to get a little discount. Just show it at the cash desk, then you have to go to another office for approval, but this will be explained to you.

ATTENTION: There are many men lurking outside the entrance of the palace who want to give you a tour. Don’t take that into account, even if they claim to be „Official from the Goverment and for free„. There are audio guides in the palace to help you understand the history and the building in your own language.

Stroll through the winding streets of Udaipur

And settle down on one or two roof terraces. These are really on every corner and once you have climbed the steps, a wonderful view over the lake opens up.

Udaipur is so picturesque that you won’t get bored taking pictures. If you are lucky, you can watch a Hindu celebration at the ghats. So every now and then you can look down to the water and see what is going on there. In Hinduism there are innumerable celebrations and parties and the probability to see one is not that small.

Tiger Lake or Badi Talab Lake

In the surroundings of the city there are many sights and places of interest. If you don’t want to drive that far and want to discover a still rather undiscovered jewel, Badi Talab Lake – or in the vernacular Tiger Lake – is recommended.

The journey is a bit complicated, because you first have to explain to the tuktuk drivers where you want to go (at a reasonable price). Many people ask unnecessarily much for the route, so negotiating makes sense. Be prepared for a few attempts until a tuktuk driver agrees to a reasonable price.

TIP: The Uber App can also be helpful here. Although there are no Uber tuktuks driving up to Tiger Lake, there is an indication of how much a car costs. Accordingly, the tuktuks should in no case exceed this price.

Udaipur Hotels

Udaipur has hotels in all price ranges. From incredibly expensive luxury hotels to really cheap hostels. My personal recommendation is the Moustache Hostel. It is not only very centrally located, but also offers a large roof terrace with a great view over the city and the lake, as well as free yoga mats and Masala Chai every evening at 17:00.

Udaipur Restaurants

Picturesque roof terraces and delicious food can be found everywhere in Udaipur. Here are my favorites.

Jheels Ginger Coffee Bar & Bakery

For all those who want to quench their thirst for really good pastries and other sweet treats.

Sunset View a Tandoori Restaurant

Perfect location for a date. I don’t remember the food, but the spacious terrace with a romantic atmosphere.

Neelam Restaurant

Not only incredibly cheap, but also incredibly delicious. Absolute top recommendation. In the same street at about the same height you can find good Thali for only 99 Rupieh – just look for the sign.
