Wenn du eine Reise nach San Remo in Italien unternimmst, kommst du nicht an meinen Ratschlägen und Tipps für Sightseeing und Essen vorbei. Meine besten San Remo Tipps habe ich in 4 Monaten gesammelt und in diesem Artikel zusammengetragen.

Sehenswürdigkeiten in San Remo

San Remo ist nicht unfassbar groß, besticht aber dennoch mit malerischen Ecken, die man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte.

Das Meer

Ganz klar, oder? San Remo liegt direkt am Meer und hat so den ein oder anderen Badestrand vorzuweisen. Wo man nicht baden kann führt eine schöne Promenade am Ufer entland, durchzogen von kleinen Häfchen und Cafes. Es ist nicht die protzige Flaniermeile, wie man sie bspw. in Nizza findet, aber trotzdem durchaus einladend. Wer sich ein bisschen sportlich betätigen und auch ein paar Nachbar-Örtchen sehen will, der sollte sich an der Promenade ein Fahrrad leihen. Eine stillgelegte Bahnstrecke wurde zum breiten Fahrradweg umgebaut und führt etliche Kilometer direkt am Meer entlang. Ein tolles Ziel ist beispielsweise Bussana Vecchia.

La Pigna

Das ist der Name der Altstadt und bedeutet Tannenzapfen. Diese ist wunderschön, steil und verwinkelt. Aber der Aufstieg lohnt sich. Nicht nur sind die Gässchen selbst unfassbar malerisch, oben angekommen hat man einen tollen Ausblick. Aber Vorsicht: Alleine solltest du die Altstadt in der Nacht besser meiden. La Pigna ist der ärmste Ort San Remos und dementsprechend ist die Kriminalitätsrate sehr hoch. Obwohl ich nie alleine unterwegs war, gab es die ein oder andere unangenehme Begegnung.

Wenn du es bis hoch zur ersten Kirche geschafft hast, dann kämpf noch ein bisschen weiter und geh die Treppen durch den schönen Garten nach oben. Dort findest du eine kleine Aussichtsplattform und wenn du noch ein bisschen weiter gehst kommst du zu einer weiteren Kirche. Dahinter geht ein ganz schmaler Weg hoch und dann kannst du einfach Ewigkeiten auf der Anhöhe entlangwandern und an der ein oder anderen Stelle die Aussicht genießen. Und keine Angst: Eigentlich sind alle Hunde gut weggesperrt, also nicht erschrecken

Außerdem sehenswert in San Remo

Das Casino von San Remo. Einst eine über alle Grenzen hinaus bekannte Institution. Heute eher traurige Erinnerung an den Glanz vergangener Jahre. Spielen kann man jedoch immer noch.

Villa Nobel: Auch Alfred Nobel, Namensgeber für den berühmten Preis und Erfinder der des Sprengstoffs, hat sich hier ganz wohlgefühlt. Wie wohl, das kann man bis heute in seiner Villa bestaunen. Wenn man jedoch Pech hat, nur von außen, weil sie mal wieder monatelang renoviert wird.

Der Wochenmarkt. Kein Vergleich zum großen Bruder in Ventimiglia, aber dennoch einen Abstecher wert. Hier findet man alles von Plunder bis zu wirklichen Schätzen. Dienstag und Samstags: 08:00-13:00

San Remo Tipps: Essen & Trinken

Den besten Burger der Stadt findet ihr bei Manik (Piazza Eroi Sanremesi 9).

Die besten Snacks zu absolut genialen Cocktails findet ihr beim Ventuno bei der Piazza Bresca. Das ist der Platz, an dem sich sowieso das ganze Nightlife abspielt.

Super leckere Croissants findet ihr bei De Mattei an der Piazza Colombo.

Und einen wunderbaren, frischen Orangensaft, super authentische Atmosphäre und ebenfalls prima Croissants (unbedingt die mit Crema probieren) gibt es bei Café delle Rose in der Corso Garibaldi. Das war mit Abstand mein liebstes Café, auch wenn es von außen nicht so hübsch aussieht. Aber die Besitzer sind einfach super.

Ein wunderbares Eis, was auch irgendwie voll Öko ist, bekommt ihr bei Sandrino in der Via Giacomo Mateotti. Achtung: Das Black Noir Eis schmeckt wie Nutella, aber man schafft kaum eine ganze Kugel.

Montags gibt es in den Kinos abends übrigens immer einen englischen Film

English version of San Remo Tipps

Today, as promised, comes the last part of my Italy Review (click here for Part 1 and 2). And because you get to know a few places after 4 month, I thought I will show you some of them. In case you come to San Remo one day.

Sightseeing

San Remo is not that big. But there are a few places to see.

The Sea

San Remo is located directly at the sea and of course you should go and see it There are a view beaches for swimming and a long, lovely promenade. Of course not such a strolling promenade like in Nice, but still nice and cozy. With a few small habours and cafes. When you want to do some sport and see also the places around San Remo, you should rent a bike at the promenade. They are cheap and there is a long, old rail line, directly on the sea, which is now a big bike lane.

La Pigna

This is the name of the old city. It is Italian for cone and is named after the shape. It is beautiful, steep and winding. But the way up is worth it. Not just that the small streets and places are beautiful, but also the view from the top. But watch out: Don’t go in la Pigna on your own at night. It is the poorest neighboorhood in San Remo and therefore there is a lot of criminality. I had some creepy encounters, but luckly nothing happened – but I wasn’t alone either.

So, when you made it to the first church on the top, go a little further up the hill through the beautiful garden. On top of this parc or something is a small view point. And when you still go a little further, behind the next big church, you can find a small street. There you can just go for hours on the top of the hills, between nice houses and you have a nice view between them. And don’t worry: most of the barking dogs are behind a fence

Of course there is more to see, for example the Casino, the week market or Villa Nobel (yes, I am talking about THIS Mr. Nobel, whom (?) the Nobel price is named after). But this would be too much.

Eat & Drink

The best burger in town you get at Manik (Piazza Eroi Sanremesi 9).

Best snacks and genious cocktails you get at Ventuno at the Piazza Bresca. This is the place where the whole nightlife is located.

Amazing croissants you get at De Mattei at Piazza Colombo.

The best orange juice of my life, an extremly authentic atmophere and also amazing croissants (try the one with crema!) you get at Cafe delle Rose in the Corso Garibaldi. It doesn’t look so nice from outside, but the staff is so nice and everything is tasty. And cheapp

Extremly tasty ice, what also is some bio stuff or something, you get at Sandrino at Via Giacomo Mateotti. But watch out with the black noir one: it tastes like Nutella, but you can hardly eat one scoop.

On Mondays are always english movies in the cinemas.

Maybe you go to San Remo one day. If it is so, I hope you have just a beautiful time like me. And maybe my tipps will help you a little bit.

2016 hatte ich das Glück 4 Monate in Italien leben zu können, genauer gesagt in San Remo. Früher war diese kleine Stadt an der Blumen-Riviera bekannt als Kurort und für das große, exklusive Casino. Der Glanz dieser Zeit ist lange vorbei und verfallene Hotels erinnern an die Pracht der damaligen Zeit.

Das Casino gibt es tatsächlich bis heute, doch das macht nicht mehr den Reiz der Stadt aus. Es sind vielmehr die verwinkelten kleinen Gässchen, die steile Altstadt in Form eines Kiefern-Zapfens, die Ruhe (vor allem in den Wintermonaten) und der unendlich weite Blick aufs Meer.

Geschichte & Sehenswürdigkeiten von San Remo

La Pigna 

Der älteste Stadtteil entstand schon im Mittelalter, was sich unschwer erkennen lässt. Papst Paul III und Napoleon nächtigten schon hier. 

Heute zählt La Pigna als ärmster Teil San Remos und ich wurde mehrmals davor gewarnt nachts alleine in den verwinkelten Gassen der Altstadt unterwegs zu sein. Viele Wohnungen hier entspringen auch noch mittelalterlichen Verhältnissen, denn sie sind teilweise ohne ordentliche Sanitär-Anlagen, Heizung oder Internet. Für Restauration fehlt sowohl das Geld als auch der Wille die uralte Infrastruktur auf Vordermann zu bringen. Tagsüber ist es jedoch kein Problem die Altstadt auf eigene Faust zu erkunden. 

La Belle Epoche 

Nachdem San Remo um 1855 Schauplatz einiger Bücher wurde, zog es die Reichen und Schönen der damaligen Zeit in den Küstenort. So wurde San Remo schnell zu einem Kurort und außerdem berühmt für sein großes Casino. Königin Elisabeth (Sissi) sowie auch Alfred Nobel, der Namensgeber des Nobelpreises, verbrachten hier ihre Zeit. Die Villa Nobel ist bis heute zu besichtigen (wenn sie nicht gerade renoviert wird). 

San Remo heute

Der Glanz der damaligen Zeit ist schon lange vorbei und die alten Villen verfallen vielerorts Stück für Stück. Restauration wird nicht subventioniert und Umbau ist verboten. So kommt es, dass viele Besitzer die Häuser verfallen lassen, um nach Ablauf einer Frist von 15 Jahren, die Erlaubnis zu haben, die Häuser abreissen zu dürfen (so wurde es mir zumindest erklärt). So zerfällt der Charme der Stadt leider immer mehr.

Festivals 

Was jedoch sich immer größerer Beliebtheit erfreut ist das jährliche Musik-Festival, welches seit über 60 Jahren in San Remo statt findet und mittlerweile sogar im Fernsehen übertragen wird. 

im März kann man außerdem Zeuge der Blumen-Parade werden, die schon in der Belle Epoche gegründet wurde und die Wichtigkeit des Wirtschaftsfaktors Blumen der sogenannten „Blumenstadt“ verdeutlicht. 

Ausflüge

Gelegen an einer der schönsten Küsten Italiens, der so genannten Blumen-Riviera, bietet San Remo zahlreiche Möglichkeiten für Ausflüge ins Hinterland und benachbarte Gemeinden, wie Bussana Vecchia. Auch Nizza, Monaco oder Ventimiglia liegen quasi um die Ecke.

San Remo Impressions

In 2016, I was fortunate enough to live 4 months in Italy, more specifically in San Remo. Formerly, this little town on the Flower Riviera was known for its large casino and, so to speak, the Las Vegas of the Mediterranean coast. The splendor of this era is long gone and dilapidated hotels are reminiscent of the splendor of the time. The casino is still there today, but that does not make the charm of San Remo. Rather, the winding little streets, the steep old town in the form of a pine cone, the tranquility (especially in the winter months) and the infinitely wide view of the sea.

History & sights of San Remo

La Pigna

The oldest part of the town was built in the Middle Ages, which is easy to recognize. Pope Paul III and Napoleon were already spending the night here.

Today, La Pigna is considered to be the poorest part of San Remo and I have been warned several times to be alone in the winding streets of the old town at night. Many apartments here also spring medieval conditions, because they are partly without proper plumbing, heating or Internet. Restauration lacks both the money and the will to revamp the ancient infrastructure. During the day, however, it is not a problem to explore the old town on your own.

La Belle era

After San Remo was the scene of some books around 1855, the rich and famous of that time moved to the coastal town. San Remo quickly became a health resort and famous for its large casino. Queen Elisabeth (Sissi) as well as Alfred Nobel, the namesake of the Nobel Prize, spent their time here. The Villa Nobel can still be visited (if it is not being renovated).

Today

The splendor of that time is long gone and the old villas are falling into ruins in many places. Restoration is not subsidized and remodeling is prohibited. So it happens that many owners let the houses expire in order to be allowed to demolish the houses at the end of a period of 15 years (at least that’s how it was explained to me). Unfortunately, the charm of the city decays more and more.

Festivals

But what is becoming increasingly popular is the annual music festival, which has been held in San Remo for over 60 years and is now even being televised.

In March you can also witness the Flower Parade, which was founded in the Belle Epoque and illustrates the importance of the economic factor flowers of the so-called „Flower City“.

Excursions

Situated on one of the most beautiful coasts of Italy, the so-called Flower Riviera, San Remo offers numerous opportunities for excursions to the hinterland and neighboring municipalities, such as Bussana Vecchia.

Nice, Monaco or Ventimiglia are also around the corner. San Remo itself, however, has so much to offer and in my San Remo Travel Guide I have collected some tips.
