7 facts about Flores

Because many have never heard of Flores in Indonesia, I have decided to give the unknown neighboring island of Bali a bit more prominence. My 7 facts about Flores, should bring you a little closer to the island.

1. Flores is Portuguese or Spanish and means flowers – even if there are no more flowers on this island than on other surrounding islands.

2. On Flores an ancient dwarf man was found, the homo floriensis. There are still many puzzles surrounding him, for example, which lineage he really descended from and why his brain is so tiny.

3. Left-hand traffic prevails on Flores!

4.Unlike many other Indonesian islands, 91% of the 1 million (!) inhabitants of Flores are Christian. It is striking that the coastal villages are mostly Muslim. This has to do with the fact that the Arabs were the first to trade, thus influencing the coastal regions first. The Christian missionaries came later and they „had left“ the hinterland. This is impressive to see today. Muslims and Christians live peacefully next to each other (to my knowledge).

5. Flores has active volcanoes. One of them is the Kelimutu, of whom I have already reported in my Flores Travel Guide. His 3 lakes change color from time to time. When I was there, they were turquoise, azure and dark green. 2006 according to Wikipedia green, brown and black. And 1986 turquoise, dark green and black red.

6. Not only on Komodo and Rinca, but also on the west coast of Flores there are still a few Komodo dragons. Incidentally, the Indonesian government is considering drastically increasing entry to the Komodo National Park in order to limit the flow of visitors. Maybe now is a good time to visit Flores.

7. Flores is still relatively unspoiled. You can hardly find retail chains, in the hinterland it is even difficult to find a warung (small diner) and hardly anyone speaks English off the beaten path. The kids, and even adults, will wave to you as you pass by scooter as there are hardly any tourists in many areas. The roads are sometimes catastrophic and you really need a long time to get from A to B. But the friendliness and openness of the people quickly make the aching butt and the tired limbs forget <3
