Wer in Belize eine kleine unberührte Trauminsel zum kleinen Preis sucht, muss ordentlich recherchieren. Zwar zählt Caye Caulker schon für viele dazu, aber wir wollten es wirklich abgelegen und wirklich klein. Und wurden fündig: Auf Tobacco Caye.

Tobacco Caye Anreise & Unterkünfte

In mitten von blauem Meer auf dem zweitgrößtem Riff der Welt thronend, findet sich dieses kleine Juwel. Gerade mal ein paar hundert Meter breit und lang und in keinen 5 Minuten umrundet ist die Insel. Zahlreiche Kokospalmen spenden überall auf der Insel Schatten und die Ufer der Koralleninsel werden von hunderten von Muscheln geschmückt. Es scheint kitschig, wie im Bilderbuch, wenn man sich der Insel nähert und die bunten Hütten langsam unter den Palmen sichtbar werden.

Unterkünfte auf Tobacco Caye

Um dieses Insel-Idyll zu erreichen, muss man allerdings ein bisschen was auf sich nehmen und ein wenig Vorausplanung leisten. Das wichtigste ist die Reservierung in einer der Unterkünfte auf Tobacco Caye. Man glaubt gar nicht, wie viele unterschiedliche Bungalowanlagen man auf so ein kleines Stück Land stellen kann. Dennoch fühlt es sich nicht beengt an.

Schön sind sie mit Sicherheit alle. Jedoch haben wir uns jedoch für Joe Joes entschieden. Zwar ist es preislich nicht günstiger, als die anderen Angebote, dafür ist gutes Schnorchel-Equipment (mit gut meine ich gute Qualität, ohne Schimmel und mit großer Auswahl), Kajaks und Stand-up Paddle Boards bereits inkludiert. Und das lohnt sich! Mit 20 $US fürs günstigste Zimmer und 45$US für die Verpflegung (3 Mahlzeiten) ist man dabei.

Außerdem ist David ein super Manager, versprüht die karibische Lässigkeit und versucht alles, um es seinen Gästen Recht zu machen.

Anreise nach Tobacco Caye

Ist der Buchungsvorgang abgeschlossen (in Ermangelung eines elektronischen Buchungssystems kann das einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen), kann man sich an die Anreise machen. Von Dangriga aus startet eine kleine „Fähre“ mehrmals täglich Richtung Tobacco Caye. Fähre in Anführungszeichen, denn hierbei handelt es sich um nicht mehr als einen schwimmenden Plastikdeckel mit Motor. „Kräuter“ rauchender Kapitän inklusive. Der einen auch nur mitnimmt, wenn man ihm per Kopfnicken bestätigt, dass man reserviert hat.

Die Überfahrt

An Tagen mit unruhiger See sollten sich Menschen mit Bandscheibenproblemen davon fern halten. Meine sind jetzt jedenfalls um einige Jahre gealtert und ich höre schon meinen Orthopäden sagen: „Frau Kimpfel, für Ihr Alter sind Ihre Bandscheiben aber wirklich beansprucht…“. Aber wenigstens habe ich dafür 20$US gezahlt. Haha.

Aller Widrigkeiten zum Trotz, die 40 Minütige Buckelpiste lohnt sich. Und das Wellenreiten ist auch gar nicht garantiert. Auf dem Rückweg habe ich schon mit Schweißperlen auf der Stirn auf die Schläge gewartet, wenn das Boot mal wieder in ein Wellental kracht. Doch diese blieben aus. Wie auf Eis schlitterten wir im Affenzahn übers spiegelglatte Meer. Warum nicht gleich?

Tobacco Caye Aktivitäten & Kosten

Das faszinierende an dieser kleinen Insel ist, dass hier die Uhren anders ticken. Man kann den ganzen Tag auf Sparflamme verbringen und trotzdem viel machen. Man hat das Gefühl, als hätte man hier mehr Zeit. Ein klassischer Morgen begann bei uns um 7:30, denn um 8:00 gab es Frühstück (übrigens wird am Anfang gleich erfragt, ob man Vegetarier ist, Allergien hat oder aus anderen Gründen gewisse Dinge nicht isst und darauf Rücksicht genommen). Anschließend ist Zeit für ein bisschen Hängematte und Verdauen und dann ein vormittäglicher Ausflug per Kayak, SUP oder beim Schnorcheln.

Mittagessen pünktlich um 12 und dann wieder jede Menge Zeit für ein gutes Buch, einen Mittagsschlaf, einen weiteren Ausflug oder eine Runde Volleyball. Und dann um 18:30 ab zum Abendessen.

Bis um 21:00 kann man noch in der Inseleigenen Bar versacken (oder seinen eigenen Alkohol vom Festland mitnehmen – billiger!) und dann werden auch schon die Schotten dicht gemacht und alles legt sich langsam aber sicher ins Bett. Naja, und man selbst dann halt auch. So fällt es auch nicht schwer am nächsten Tag um 07:30 wieder die Augen aufzuschlagen.

Extra Aktivitäten

Wer ein bisschen mehr Action braucht, der kann das natürlich auch haben – gegen Aufpreis. Es ist durchaus möglich Tauchen zu gehen, doch dafür muss man ziemlich tief in die Tasche greifen. Wer zur Nachbarinsel in die Manatee-Bucht fahren will, kann sich ein Boot chartern. Das bringt euch dann auch gleich noch zum Bird Island und ein paar anderen schönen Stopps. In Ermangelung einer ausreichenden Urlaubskasse mussten wir auf dieses Vergnügen jedoch schweren Herzens verzichten. Aber halb so wild, denn das wunderschöne Belize Barrier Reef erstreckt sich direkt vor der Haustür und wartet mit allerlei wunderschönen Korallen und Kreaturen. Nurse Sharks und Spotted Eagle Rays zählten dabei zu meinen Favoriten. Wer Glück hat, sieht sogar Seekühe oder Schildkröten.

Deswegen nehmt euch am besten ausreichend Barmittel mit, denn Karten oder PayPal Zahlung ist hier nicht angesagt. Nur Bares ist Wahres.

20 +20 = 40$US p.P. Für Hin- und Rückfahrt

Eigentlich ist es damit auch fertig, wer sich aber Abends das ein oder andere Bier oder eben einen Ausflug leisten will, sollte nochmal einiges einstecken. Bier kostet 5$US Dollar, und einen Bootsausflug bekommt man für 40$. Wer tauchen will, sollte knappe 200$ für 2 Tauchgänge einrechnen. Pi Mal Daumen würde ich empfehlen nochmal 100-150$ mitzunehmen, je nach Tatendrang. Und je nachdem wie lange man anschließend noch in Belize bleibt, um überschüssiges Geld loszuwerden.

Fazit

Tobacco Caye ist eine Perle im karibischen Meer und auf jeden Fall eine Reise wert. Hier ist alles super entspannt und ruhig und man hat das Gefühl hier länger zu leben – ohne sich zu langweilen.

Auf der Kontraseite steht die Anreise und ein leichtes Müllproblem, welches auf der Insel herrscht. Auch schockieren die vielen toten Muscheln, die überall auf und um die Insel verteilt sind. Aber diese werden einfach zum Essen gejagt und nicht, um sie als Souvenirs zu verkaufen. Insofern ist es eigentlich auch nichts anderes als Fischen.

Auf jeden Fall kann ich eine klare Empfehlung für Tobacco Caye aussprechen und würde wieder hinfahren. Das nächste Mal mit genug Geld in der Tasche, um endlich zur Manateebucht fahren zu können 😉

Tobacco Caye in Belize: Where time stands still – Travelogue

Those who are looking for a small untouched dream island in Belize for a small price, have to do a lot of research. Caye Caulker is already one of them, but we really wanted it to be remote and really small. And we found it: On Tobacco Caye.

Tobacco Caye Arrival & Accommodation

In the middle of blue sea on the second largest reef of the world enthroned, this small jewel is found. Just a few hundred meters wide and long and in less than 5 minutes the island is surrounded. Numerous coconut palms provide shadows everywhere on the island and the shores of the coral island are decorated by hundreds of shells. It seems kitschy, like in a picture book, when one approaches the island and the colourful huts slowly become visible under the palm trees.

But in order to reach this island idyll, one has to do some advance planning. The most important thing is the reservation in one of the accommodations on Tobacco Caye. One does not believe at all how many different bungalow complexes one can place on such a small piece of land. Nevertheless, it does not feel cramped.

They are all beautiful for sure. But we decided for Joe Joes. Not cheaper than the other offers, but good snorkeling equipment (by good I mean good quality, without mould and with a large selection), kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are already included. And it’s worth it! With 20 $US for the cheapest room and 45$US for the catering (3 meals) you are included.

David is also a great manager, sprays the Caribbean casualness and tries everything to please his guests.

Arriving

Once the booking process is complete (in the absence of an electronic booking system, this can take some time), you can start your journey. From Dangriga a small „ferry“ departs several times a day towards Tobacco Caye. Ferry in quotation marks, because this is no more than a floating plastic cover with motor. „Herbs“ smoking captain included. He also takes you only if you confirm him by nodding his head that you have a reservation.

On days with restless sea people with disc problems should keep away from it. Mine have now aged by a few years and I can already hear my orthopaedists say: „Ms. Kimpfel, for your age your intervertebral discs are really strained…„. But at least I paid 20$US for it. Haha.

Despite all adversities, the 40 minute mogul run is worth it. And the torture is not guaranteed. On the way back I waited with sweat beads on my forehead for the blows when the boat crashes into a wave valley again. But these were missing. As if on ice, we slipped across the mirror-smooth sea in a high speed. Why not earlier?

Tobacco Caye Activities & Costs

The fascinating thing about this small island is that the clocks tick differently here. You can spend the whole day on a low flame and still do a lot. You have the feeling as if you have more time here. A classic morning started with us at 7:30 a.m. because at 8:00 a.m. we had breakfast (by the way at the beginning we are asked if you are vegetarian, have allergies or don’t eat certain things for other reasons). Afterwards there is time for a little hammock and digestion and then a morning excursion by kayak, SUP or snorkeling.

Lunch punctually at 12 and then again plenty of time for a good book, a nap, another trip or a round of volleyball. And then at 18:30 for dinner.

Until 21:00 you can sip a drink at the island’s own bar (or take your own alcohol with you from the mainland – cheaper!) and then the everything slowly but surely goes to bed. Well, and you yourself then, too. So it’s not hard to open your eyes again the next day at 07:30.

Extra activities

If you need a little more action, you can of course have it – for an extra charge. It’s quite possible to go diving, but you have to dig deep into your pocket. If you want to go to the neighbouring island in Manatee Bay, you can charter a boat. This will bring you to Bird Island and some other nice stops. Due to the lack of a sufficient holiday budget, we had to renounce this pleasure with a heavy heart. But not as bad, because the beautiful Belize Barrier Reef stretches directly in front of the front door and waits with all sorts of beautiful corals and creatures. Nurse Sharks and Spotted Eagle Rays were among my favourites. If you are lucky, you will even see manatees or turtles.

That’s why it’s best to take enough cash with you, because cards or PayPal payment is not the order of the day. Only cash is true.

Here is a little help for budgeting:

20 +45 = 65$US p.P. Per night.
20 +20 = 40$US p.p. For getting there and return
Actually it is also finished with it, but those who want to afford one or the other beer or a trip, should take some more. Beer costs 5$US Dollar, and a boat trip costs 40$. If you want to dive, you should add 200$ for 2 dives. I would recommend to take another 100-150$, depending on the zest for action. And depending on how long you stay in Belize afterwards to get rid of the rest of the money.

Conclusion

Tobacco Caye is a pearl in the Caribbean Sea and definitely worth a trip. Here everything is super relaxed and quiet and you have the feeling to live longer – without getting bored.

On the opposite side is the journey and a slight garbage problem that prevails on the island. Also shocking are the many dead shells that are spread all over and around the island. But they are simply hunted for food and not to sell as souvenirs. In this respect, it is actually nothing more than fishing.

In any case I can make a clear recommendation for Tobacco Caye and would go there again. Next time with enough money in my pocket to finally drive to Manateebayt 😉
