In a Nutshell:
– Schnorcheln am Tanote Bay & Shark Bay
– Tauchen

Meine Erfahrungen in Koh Tao waren überwiegend paradiesischer Natur.

Was die Preise natürlich wieder extrem drückt. Das zieht wieder rum die Besucher an. Was mehr Tauchschulen entstehen lässt.

In diesem Sinne: Safe Travels.

Things to do in Koh Tao, Thailand

It’s been a long time since I visited this island in Thailand. My experiences in Koh Tao were mostly paradisiacal. And before the memory fades, I have listed my Things to do in Koh Tao here.

By the way: Because my visit is already a while back, I have checked the information to the best of my knowledge and belief. If something has changed, then write me in the comments and I correct it!

Diving & Snorkeling

Tanote Bay

Koh Tao is best known for its many diving and snorkeling opportunities, attracting the majority of tourists. You are not alone in Koh Tao nowhere. But we stayed at Tanote Bay and it was a little more quiet there.

Best of all, the bay in front is a snorkeling paradise. You can go directly from the beach into the water and is surrounded by countless fish and corals. We dived through whole swarms of fish and when you are still, you can hear the fish eat. The water was incredibly clear and there was hardly any current. Just lovely.

Tanote Bay Today

Even today, Tanote Bay seems to be a snorkeling paradise, although some complain that many tourists inadvertently deal with nature. So please dear people, stop stepping on coral! They look like stones, but they are not. Oh yes, and some bungalow facilities have come too. We stayed at the Poseidon Resort, which was reasonably priced, but nothing special. Today, the selection is probably a bit bigger. Let me have your tips there, if you know the current situation at Tanote Bay!

Shark Bay

My first beach from the picture book and therefore I remember very well. White sand, turquoise-blue sea, deep-hanging palm trees. And also nice for snorkeling. We did not see any sharks but lots of beautiful fish and even an octopus. Always keep an eye on the beach, because you can really forget time here.
While we swam along the rocks on the right side of the beach, the middle part littered of dead corals. Therefore, probably the bright color of the beach. A really sad sight unfortunately.

Mango Bay

The Mango Bay has a picturesque name and is located in the north. Actually, it should also be nice to snorkel, but in the rain, the water can quickly become cloudy. As in the case when we were there. After the rainy season, the street is very dilapidated or simply washed away, which makes the „journey“ very difficult. Advantage: If all these points come together, you are pretty much alone at Mango Bay.

Diving

We both did not dive, but I can well imagine that Koh Tao has a lot to offer, because snorkeling was such an experience. You also have the chance to see whale sharks. If you believe some reports, the diving on Koh Tao is also a mass processing. And we had the impression too. Especially in the village around the ferry port (west coast) it is over with the tranquility. Here, the diving schools undercut and compete for every visitor. Which of course pushes prices extremely low. This attracts more visitors. What makes more diving schools possible. What the prices … ah, you know it.

Viewpoints

Koh Tao is very hilly and offers a lot of great viewpoints over the island. Some are found driving by, others are more hidden.

Half way to Mango Bay you’ll find Mango Bay Viewpoint, Mango View Point, Northern Mango Bay View Point … it’s definitely become more. And the residents have also noticed that the tourists are happy to let the beautiful view cost a little. In the meantime, all View Points seem to cost between 20 and 100 baht „admission“. For some you can buy a drink instead. When we have been there, it did not cost anything, but the view is certainly just as nice today. And if you can also suck on a fresh coconut nut: Why not.

Get a massage

If you ever get the opportunity to be massaged at an affordable price, then you should take this opportunity. For about 10 € one is kneaded for an hour. A pleasant change, after swimming all day through the sea.

Explore Koh Tao on your own

Most of the time it is still fun to explore the island by foot, by scooter or quad. As already mentioned, I recommend after the rainy season a quad or motor cross bike (please drive only with driving license and experience!), As many ways are otherwise impassable and the small scooter tires have no chance. Of course, for those who are good on foot, it is also easy to wander around the island. Most hotels have some rough drawn maps or there are also travel guides with maps or Google Offline Maps. So that you are well equipped for your own personal adventure. But beware: Do not underestimate the strong gradients! The Thai people are less keen and have built so many tracks more or less straight with an adventurous pitch angle. This can be a challenge for both the legs and the scooter engine.

The Death Island: Unexplained deaths on Koh Tao

I read with horror of the deaths on Koh Tao. That was not an issue at the time I was there. Meanwhile, according to my information 8 people have died on the beautiful island. The police seems to cover up more than enlighten. In addition, there is talk of mafia structures. So is it safe to go to Koh Tao?

I would like to answer this question very carefully. The circumstances of the deaths are quite strange, the alleged suicides more than doubtful. Also, a rape came to the display, which was not taken seriously and simply denied. From the police itself.

Nevertheless, one must also say: Every year 1.5 million tourists visit the diver’s paradise off the coast of Thailand. And minus the cases mentioned, these 1.5 million return unharmed. But of course, that’s no guarantee that nothing will happen to you. Also, staying away from parties and night beaches, does not have to be a guarantor to stay unscathed.

Whether you want to take the risk to visit this island, everyone has to decide for themselves. Mafia and criminals or not: Most of the visitors get nothing from it and I would not take it as an opportunity to renounce the beauty of the island. However, if you can barely close an eye at night and keep looking over your shoulder, I can only say that Thailand has many beautiful places. It does not have to be on bending and breaking Koh Tao.

In this sense: Safe Travels.
