In a Nutshell. 5 Gründe um Bacalar zu besuchen

  1. Die 7 Farben des Sees
  2. Kayaken über den See
  3. Die Ruhe unter den wenigen Touristen genießen
  4. Im Barbanegra Tacos essen

Essen in Bacalar

Sicherheit in Bacalar

1 Day in Bacalar, Mexico: Why you should visit the lagoon

In a Nutshell. Reasons to visit Bacalar

  • the 7 colours of the lake
  • kayaking across the lake
  • enjoy the peace among the few tourists
  • eating tacos at Barbanegra
  • feel safe

Bacalar is a small town on the Yucatan Peninsula. Somewhere between the famous Tulum from Instagram and the border town Chetumal. A sleepy village with more guides than tourists in low season. And that lies on the banks of the Laguna Bacalar. Which this is actually about.

The lagoon of Bacalar or the lagoon of the 7 colours

Laguna de Siete Colores is another name of the lagoon. It is actually not a lagoon, but a freshwater lake. But one hardly notices this, as the Laguna Bacalar shines in the most beautiful blue tones as one is used to from the Caribbean sea. Hence the name.

But not only the extraordinary colouring makes the lagoon special. It is actually a union of 7 cenotes (collapsed limestone caves) and also famous for its stromatolithes. The latter look rather unspectacular, but are millions of years old and even alive. At least the first few millimetres of their surface, which makes them super sensitive to external influences. More exciting is the fact that the lagoon used to be a hiding place for pirates. You can imagine that the bad guys liked it here in the shallow, warm water of the lagoon.

Preserve nature and only go swimming in the lagoon without sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Also don’t touch the stromatolites, because they need millions of years to recover.

Between action and relaxation

There’s not much to do in Bacalar. The place is very small and invites with hip restaurants to feast. In the midday heat the place seems almost extinct and you hardly see any tourists (at least in the low season). Beside the gigantic tourist magnets, as Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun, Bacalar is often overlooked – and not least therefore invites to stay.

Nevertheless, if you want some action, I recommend a kayak tour across the lake. This lake has hardly any currents and is wonderful to navigate. You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddles almost everywhere. The rentals also offer a possibility to get to the lake, as this is not so easy in places due to the construction. Also boat trips are offered everywhere.

By taxi or after a short hike, one also finds further cenotes at the edge of the lagoon, which even offer hammocks and other comforts for a small entrance fee.

But to be completely honest: One does not need to spend more than 2 days in Bacalar, because then one has probably really seen everything.

Food in Bacalar

In Papaya Maya I drank one of the best fruit juices. The generous seating area on the first floor invites you to linger. There are also vegetarian options for a change. The Papaya Maya is only open until 16:00, so it is mainly suitable for breakfast or a light lunch.

La Pina is a cute restaurant that opens its true splendour in the inner courtyard. Here, the tables extend far into the garden. All decorated with the eponym – a pineapple. The menu is Mexican and varied. The food was really good, although I wasn’t completely convinced, which could have been due to my choice. Still a recommendation, just because of the location.

The best comes at the end and that would be Barbanegra. Absolutely go there. Also here you dine Mexican, in a very hipster-ish atmosphere. But it’s not only the location that makes the difference. We were seduced by the food on the next table: Tacos. And don’t regret our choice! It’s also inexpensive and the waiters are very friendly. A clear recommendation.

Safety in Bacalar

Bacalar is so sleepy that you don’t have to be afraid, especially in the (tourist) centre. While in Cancun we already felt really insecure at dusk (and also had an unpleasant encounter), in Bacalar we never felt insecure even at night. I was also alone in the early morning hours photographing the sunrise (which is not really worth it) and it was okay.

Conclusion: Bacalar is worthwhile to simply enjoy a little peace and quiet and the blue colors of the lake. The physical well-being is also taken care of – both culinary and from a safety point of view. 1-2 days is the perfect length of stay.
