Jodhpur Sights

Jodhpur in the Indian Rajasthan should not be missing on a round trip. It is also known as the blue city (Jaipur is the pink city and Jaisalmer the yellow city). The name comes from the houses below the fort, which are painted blue, which is said to help against mosquitoes. What other sights are in Jodhpur you will find out in this small travel guide.

Jodhpur Sightseeing

The megacity Jodhpur has a different atmosphere than the other cities in Rajasthan. Somehow even dirtier and poorer. Our daily way leads us through dirty worker streets, where we really stood out. Away from the tourist attractions Jodhpur is anything but picturesque. Even at the famous bell tower in the center I can’t get rid of the neglected impression of the city. I do not find it beautiful here. But nevertheless fascinating.

By the way: If you have already made your way to the Ghanta Ghar, the bell tower, make a detour to the probably most famous samosa shop of the city, the Shahi samosa, which is located right outside the gates. For a few cents you can get extremely tasty and freshly prepared samosa in different variations. 2-3 of them and you are really full.

Meherangarh Fort

Compared to the Umaid Bhavan Palace, where only the museum is accessible, the fort high above the city is accessible to everyone for an entrance fee. And although I have seen many forts on my Rajasthan journey, this one is definitely worth a detour. In its extent it exceeds everything and offers not only a great view over the city and the hinterland. Included in the entrance fee is also an audio guide, which brings us closer to the history of this culturally rich region.

Flying Fox Ziplining

Ziplining is recommended for those who want to discover the extensive grounds of the fort not only from the inside. But therewith, it has to be said that one does not really float over the fort as it is said on the homepage, but rather over its back foothills and park complex. For those who have already been ziplining, it will be a rather mediocre spectacular experience. But for those who have a passion for it or do it for the first time, I can really recommend it. From here you also have a spectacular view of the blue city.

Tip: In case of strong smog, the sunset tour is not as picturesque as hoped for. Here, it is recommendable to start the ziplining tour 1-2h before sunset, as the dusk starts earlier due to the smog.

Jaswant Thada Palace

Not far behind the fort along the road you will find the marble palace. The entrance fee is not included in the price of the fort but it is not very high. Picturesquely it nestles up to a small lake. If you already walk around here, have a look at this little jewel and take some nice pictures.

Sights in Jodhpur that I did not see myself

Desert Rock Park

If you are a fan of botanical gardens, you can enjoy yourself here and take a little time out from the hustle and bustle of the city. But for us, the entrance fee was simply too high, so that we did not visit the park (but the entrance looked promising).

Bal Samand Lake

On the way to Mandore is the Bal Samand Lake, which was built as a water reservoir and on its banks is the former summer palace, which is now a hotel.

Mandore Garden

Lying near the Mandore Fort and it is said that the stone terraces and temples are like witnesses from another time.

Kunj Bihari Temple

This temple is located in the middle of the city near the bell tower and the market and therefore invites you to take a detour.

Temple of Achal Nath

In the immediate vicinity is the Achal-Nath-Temple, which you can also visit at the same time.
