Porto Foodguide: Werbung, unbeauftragt. English version below.

Klare Empfehlung in diesem Porto Foodguide.

Foodguide Porto: O Rapido

Gehobener Fischgenuss

Pasta in Porto

Francesinha in O Muro

Was soll ich sagen? WOW!

Rua do Bolhão 223, 4000-112 Porto, Portugal

Porto Foodguide

My Porto food guide

Portugal is known for its good food. Especially port cities like Lisbon or Porto are brimming with fresh fish and seafood. But also with a burger or pasteis de nata you can spoil yourself. That’s why I wrote this little Porto Food Guide.

Classic Portuguese

If you want to immerse yourself in the original Portuguese cuisine and in a cozy atmosphere, I recommend the O Rapido near Sao Bento. Already at the entrance advertises the inconspicuous restaurant with 100% Portuguese food. The seats are limited here and the homelike restaurant is no secret thanks to its excellent rating on TripAdvisor. But with a reservation it’s no problem. The boss personally takes care of one. His advice: rather eat the whole octopus directly from the shell, instead of shoveling the portions onto the plate, as this preserves the taste better. Said, done and not disappointed. Priced definitely in the cheap category, service and taste far beyond. Clear recommendation in this Porto foodguide.

Delightful fish

Let’s stay with the octopus, because I came twice to enjoy this (for me rare) delicacy. In the Vinhas d’alho this is already much finer prepared and the rest of the ambience is a bit chic. If it is not crowded, you can sit outside and look out at the Duoro, or you can sit in the stylish turquoise interior. In terms of taste, the octopus was even more convincing, even if it was not quite so tender. The real food spur, however, is the chocolate cake with liquid core and strawberry ice cream. At this dessert everything was really on point and makes the visit perfect. Prices and atmosphere are a bit upscale, but not off-topic. The visit with dessert is an absolute must.

A burger for a change

Anyone who has enough of fish in the meantime and wants to have a slightly faster meal can choose Tripadvisor’s CURB. Holding a 5 star rating over 500 reviews is certainly a challenge. The small shop is a bit hidden, narrow and a bit spartan, but very clean and well maintained. The wooden stools and tiny space, however, do not invite you to linger. Who has enjoyed the juicy burger, also moves on quickly. Luckily, because if you are not one of the first after opening, there may be a queue. The service is also excellent here and as side dishes, for example, salads, arugula with cheese or chips can be selected. Everything is practically served on a silver tray. An extremely tasty stopover.

May it be pasta?

I count myself among the lovers of Italian food and with me probably feel 82 million Germans as well. No wonder that in Porto one has no problem finding an Italian restaurant. With fresh fish, many common dishes taste even finer. For example, the salmon caviar spaghetti in Fiume Duoro. Another plus: the possibility to have a great view of the Duoro from the upper floor even with bad weather. Unfortunately located in the slightly overpriced main tourist area of the old town. Salmon and the view make up for the higher prices and the „charm“ of the waiters.

Cais da Ribeira 22, Porto, Portugal

The Porto specialty

Porto has a very special specialty in which all nutritionists beat their hands over their heads. We are talking about Francesinha. The food consists of bread, steak, chorizo and cooked ham, separated by cheese, with a fried egg topped with cheese and served in a beer sauce with fries. Who doesn’t believe me: google it. The exact preparation always differs slightly (with or without egg, with minced meat instead of steak, etc.) but the effect remains the same: more than nutritious food. Frankly, it actually tasted extremely good, but now I wont eat meat for a while.

Francesinha at O Muro

If you are as curious as I am, I can recommend Restaurant O Muro. Not only because the view over the Duoro on the upper floor on the wall is simply priceless. The service is also very good and they have managed to make this monster of specialty really good. For a Francesinha you have to pay about 15 euros at O Muro. But worth it.

Cais da Estiva 87, 4050-080 Porto, Portugal

Enjoying ice-cream

Already in Lisbon, Santini made our hearts beat faster and so the joy was great when we also found a branch in Porto. It does not take many words, it’s just a super delicious ice cream. By the way: Do not be put off by the queue. Experience has shown that, thanks to thoughtful organization, you do not wait long for the cool enjoyment.

Largo dos Lóios 16-20, 4050-338 Porto, Portugal

The original: Pasteis de Nata

Let’s go from one offspring to the next. Anyone who has ever been to Lisbon will have found and enjoyed the famous Pasteis de Nata at about every corner (if you have not, you should jump back into the plane and get it!). Not only that in Porto this incredibly delicious dessert was called in most cafés with Pastel de Nata, and the wow effect was long gone. Until we found and tasted an offshoot of the famous Pasteis de Nata Manufactory „Manteigaria“. What can I say? WOW!

R. de Alexandre Braga 24, 4000-049 Porto, Portugal

For late hours

If you are looking for a lively nightlife in the old town of Ribeira, you may be looking for a long time. Obviously, the action shifts to after dinner (which is in good hands in Ribeira) towards the university and Clerigos church. Here you will find, among other things, the MUDA, where you can sit very comfortably. The cocktails are also very good, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Beware, drinks like the White Lady are very strong. With classics like Caipi and Co, everything is fine. My tip: come a little earlier and stay seated on the ground floor. Most of the guests are still in the upper floor to eat, the party people have not arrived yet and so it can happen that you have room and bartender all to yourself for a while.

R. de Cândido dos Rice 64, 4050-151 Porto, Portugal

Above the roofs

Porto is quite hilly and attracts with one or the other Miraduro with a view over the city. If you do not want to lug your own drinks and want a comfortable place, I recommend one of the roof top bars. In the Hotel Dom Henrique, for example, there is a chic bar with surprisingly moderate prices. While the Mojito and the view are really great, the service is rather questionable and not really appropriate for a hotel of this category. Maybe we only had one bad day and a visit is worth it just for the view.

Rua do Bolhão 223, 4000-112 Porto, Portugal

Have breakfast

I love the breakfast cafes of the southern countries. Be it Rome, Venice, Barcelona or just Porto: The small coffee at the counter and the pastry piece are taken happily blatantly before it goes to work. Nothing better than to watch this hustle and bustle comfortably from the table. That’s exactly what you’ll find in the central Garota da Baixa. In addition, the waiters are really friendly and the pastries are good. And the orange juice!

If you like a little more modern and stylish, you can go to the opposite site of the street to NATA Lisboa. From ambience to taste to prices everything is impeccable, but lacks the charm of the location and the warmth of the service.
