Also nichts wie hin!

5 unknown places worth a visit

No matter where I go, I’m always looking for unknown places that are off the beaten track. In the course of my travel history I have been able to discover some really great places. My Top 5 (so far) of unknown places, which are worth a journey, I have listed in this article. You probably already know one or the other place from earlier reports, e.g. from Sulawesi or Thailand.

1st Koh Chang

Little Koh Chang is located on the west coast of Thailand and is often confused with its big brother on the east coast. In contrast to the famous namesake, however, life here is much more rudimentary. Cold water, electricity only at certain times and time for a lot of idleness. Koh Chang is a very special place for me, which is why you can also find a whole blog post about it.

2nd Togian Islands

You will find the most beautiful place in the world for me so far on Sulawesi. Or in between. The Togian Islands are a protected archipelago between the northern arms of the Indonesian island and a pearl of nature. The coral reefs here are (again) intact, the culture of the local people is unique and the landscape breathtaking. Already the entrance with the ferry into the „capital“ Wakai, was breathtaking: On the left and on the right small islands with white sand beaches with low hanging palms and beside us the dolphins jumped out of the water (no joke!). It couldn’t be more kitschy. Above all the small island Poya Lisa was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to. Life here is as minimalistic as on Koh Chang and you have plenty of time for good books, snorkeling trips and just thinking about life. If you want to know more about the Togian Islands, you should visit my travel guide.

3rd Flores

Let’s get a little bigger and move on to Flores. Unfortunately, many Bali tourists spurn the nearby idyll. But Flores not only boasts a unique culture – my night in Wae Rebo was unique – it also has the Komodo National Park on its doorstep. Our 3-day boat trip from island to island belongs to the top 3 highlights of my travel life so far and is really hard to beat. You’ll also find a travel guide and 7 interesting facts about Flores that you certainly didn’t know yet.

Komodo Nationalpark

4th Colombia Pacific Coast

Let’s go to the mainland. Not that Colombia is one of the most common destinations, but especially the Caribbean coast is already well developed. Less well-known and popular is the Pacific coast. Not least because the journey leads through a few disreputable areas. But this is all half as dramatic. And once you have made it to the Bahia Malaga National Park, you should spend the night at the Pacifico Hostel. In an exposed location on a rock, it sits enthroned in the middle of the rain forest with a wonderful view of the sea and the offshore islets. The view from the bungalows goes into the dense jungle, crossed by the turquoise water of the river (via which you also arrive, as the Pacifico Hostel can only be reached from the sea). If you can live without WLAN for a few days, you are in good hands here. Everything else is taken care of extensively – silence, possibility for excursions, food and also a little party.

5th Belize

My last unknown place worth traveling is an entire country. Or who of you has heard of Belize? Most of you looked at me without understanding when I said I was going to Belize. But the small tax paradise in Central America deserves more attention. And it will certainly get that in the next few years. After all, the whole economy is being converted from fishing and timber extraction to tourism. Travel guides like Lonely Planet have already included it in their hit lists. Those who visit Belize will not only meet unbelievably friendly people, but will also find an incredibly beautiful nature (I just say second largest barrier reef in the world and Blue Hole) and a fascinating culture (Mayas and, according to National Geographic, the most important temple cave in the world). If you have the chance to explore this multifaceted country, you should take it. So let’s go!
